perth castlePerth has had a long and colourful history, just as most of the regional centres in Scotland have.  It is believed that hunters and gatherers have been in the Perth area for thousands of years, and gradually they have settled into a more permanent development.  The close proximity of Perth to Scone (the capital of Alba for a few hundred years prior to the late Middle Ages) in the north east suggests that Perth itself must have been occupied by farmers and settlers from the early Medieval period, if not earlier.

Perth flourished in the Middle Ages, particularly after the twelfth century when it was given burgh status.  Many craftspeople and tradespeople gathered in Perth as it was ideally located on the River Tay and on routes to the north, west and south.  Perth was occupied by English forces in the early fourteenth century, only to be recaptured by Robert the Bruce in 1313.  Fourteen years later, Perth was again the site of a skirmish when Edward Balliol, pretender to the Scottish throne, took Perth and with it the Scottish crown.  This event led to the Scottish Civil War, and soon after a permanent English occupation.

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Perth was the stage for incredible historical battles and political intrigue.  In 1651 Charles II was crowned nearby at Scone, but before the year was through Oliver Cromwell had seen to it that his forces established their presence in Perth to counteract the claims Charles II was putting forth.  The Jacobite Uprisings saw Perth occupied three times by Jacobite supporters.
